When former Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson made his comment on Canada’s housing market last week, there might have been more truth in it than many of his critics want to admit.

“Finally, someone said it out loud, something we all know, but are not supposed to say,” said long-time Vancouver city councillor and urban planner, Gord Price in an interview with 1130NewsRadio.

Not even 24 hours into his new role as Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, Robertson was clipped saying he does not think housing prices need to be lower.

But Price is coming to Gregor Robertson’s defence and thinks critics should widen their lens.

“I am not sure how much people really want government to be setting the price up or down.” Price said. “Even if they could, they really can not and you would not want them to.”

Price explains that it is important to remember that the housing market moves with global trends.

And, if government tries to push prices down too hard, they risk setting off a chain reaction that could destabilize the economy.

“If you do not like inflation, you are sure not going to like deflation,” Price argued.

Metro Vancouver rents remain depressingly high despite B.C. price drop

British Columbia is tied for the largest annual decline in apartment rents in all of Canada, but Metro Vancouver renters may not be seeing the savings when it’s time to pay. According to the latest Rentals.ca and Urbanation report, which looks at numbers from June 2025, the country’s average asking rent for all residential properties declined 2.7 per cent year-over-year. It was the ninth consecutive month of annual rent drops. B.C. and Alberta experienced the biggest annual decline in apartment rents at 3.1 per cent. However, four of the top five most expensive cities to rent in the top Canadian markets list remain in the Metro Vancouver area. Alen Szylowiec/Shutterstock “Asking rents for purpose-built and condo rental apartments declined the most over the past year in B.C. and Alberta, each decreasing by 3.1 per cent, to an average of $2,472 and $1,741, respectively,” said Rentals.ca in its report. “Ontario and B.C. were the only provinces to record a two-year decrease in apartment rents, declining 3.6 per cent and 3.1 per cent, respectively.” According to Rentals.ca, North Vancouver is the most expensive municipality in Canada to rent for the fourth consecutive month, with the average asking rent for a one-bedroom rental reaching $2,602 per month and a two-bedroom rental coming in at $3,567 per month. Vancouver, Coquitlam, Burnaby, and Toronto round out the other five most expensive places to rent in the country. Rentals.ca The report also shows that among Canada’s six largest cities, Vancouver experienced the second-largest annual decline in apartment rents in June, dropping seven per cent. However, the asking rent for a one-bedroom is $2,529 per month, and for a two-bedroom, it is $3,388 per month. “Despite the dip in rents during the past year, average asking rents in Canada remained 4.1 per cent higher than the level from two years earlier ($2,042) and 11.9 per cent higher than the level from three years earlier ($1,899),” added Rentals.ca Volodymyr Kyrylyuk/Shutterstock Several other B.C. cities also cracked the 50 priciest Canadian markets to rent, including New Westminster at number 17, Victoria at number 19, Langley at number 21, Surrey at number 26, and Nanaimo at number 31. Average asking rents in Canada remain 5.7 per cent higher than two years ago and 12.6 per cent higher than three years ago. Are you a renter who’s seeing a drop in the asking rent price? Bidding process to begin to build a new superport in Metro Vancouver

The multi-billion-dollar project to build a major new container terminal in Metro Vancouver is now preparing to enter the construction phase. Vancouver Fraser Port Authority has announced it will begin the bidding process in July 2025 seeking a major construction contractor for the superport project of building Roberts Bank Terminal 2. The project received key approvals from the federal and provincial governments in 2023, with the federal approval of the environmental assessment outlining 370 legally binding conditions. In 2024, the port authority also submitted an application to the federal government’s Fisheries and Oceans Canada related to fish species at risk compliance, with regulators committed to making a decision by no later than October 2026. The port authority calls this superport a “transformational, nation building project that will support Canada’s economic security and trade reliance.” When operational, it will have the capacity to trade over $100 billion worth in goods each year. The new superport capacity provided by Roberts Bank Terminal 2 will boost Metro Vancouver’s overall container handling capacity by an additional 2.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) per year. This also doubles the immediate area’s existing container terminal capacity; Deltaport, the first terminal at Roberts Bank, currently has a capacity to handle 2.4 million twenty-foot equivalent container units (TEUs) per year, following a recent expansion of the intermodal railyard. For further contrast, the Centerm container terminal, immediately north of the Downtown Eastside in Vancouver, currently has a capacity for 1.5 million TEUs — up from 900,000 TEUs prior to the full completion of its expansion in 2023. This is in addition to over 18,000 jobs during construction. The procurement process starting this summer will begin with the Request For Qualifications (RFQ) for a contractor to achieve the land reclamation component — the creation of about 450 acres of new land, equivalent to nearly half the size of Vancouver’s Stanley Park. This is an expansion of the existing manmade peninsula, where Deltaport, separately operated by Global Containers Terminal, is also located. But it will be a completely different facility under a separate ownership and operation group. Through the RFQ, the port authority will create a shortlist of three qualified construction proponents, inviting them to participate in the Request For Proposals (RFP) process of submitting a detailed bid proposal. At a later date, the port authority will conduct separate bidding processes for other components of the superport, such as the equipment for the container terminal and the ground transportation access infrastructure. During the federal government’s previous environmental assessment process, the port authority estimated the project could carry a total cost of over $2 billion. Following significant market inflation in the cost of construction materials, equipment, and labour since the pandemic, the cost is now likely significantly higher. If all goes as planned with the procurement process and fisheries application, construction mobilization and early works would occur in 2027, with major land reclamation work beginning in 2028. The terminal would begin its operations in the mid-2030s. New cranes arrive at GCT Deltaport container terminal on April 20, 2025. 6 Patio Pieces You Didn’t Know You Could and Should Clean with Dish Soap

Outdoor patio furniture and decor is made of weather-resistant materials, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t get dirty. Properly storing items is essential, as is regular cleaning. The good news is, you can effectively clean all kinds of patio items with one product that may already be sitting by your kitchen sink: Dawn dish soap. “Patio items accumulate all sorts of grime—from food spills and sticky drink residues to pollen, dust, and even environmental oils,” says Arianna Castro, P&G home care scientist. Whether it’s regular dish soap or one of the brand’s heavy-duty sprays, Castro says they are extremely useful for cleaning a variety of patio items, and remove up to 99% of grease and grime. “These products are designed to lift and break down these oily and greasy soils, allowing them to be easily rinsed away,” the she says. To help you keep your patio ready for lounging and entertaining all season long, here are the outdoor items you can clean with dish soap. 1. Outdoor Chair Cushions and Rugs If you notice a stain on your outdoor chair cushions or a dirty spot on the patio rug, Castro suggests spot-cleaning them with dish soap. “It’s great for treating stains, especially those that are greasy or food-based,” she says. Dawn dish soap is excellent for targeted stain treatment according to the expert, but she does recommend using a dedicated outdoor fabric cleaner for full cleaning. Before you use dish soap to spot-treat outdoor textiles, try it on a hidden spot such as the under-side of a rug to make sure it doesn’t cause discoloration. Related 2. Hard, Non-Porous Surfaces Dawn dish soap products are gentle on finishes but tough on dirt, which makes them ideal for cleaning a variety of patio pieces and backyard fixtures. “You can use them on hard, non-porous surfaces such as plastic or resin furniture, glass tabletops, [and] vinyl siding on sheds,” Castro says. One option is to mix a couple of drops of dish soap with warm water in a large bucket and scrub the items with a non-abrasive brush or sponge. Another is to use one of the brand’s sprays and spritz the dirty surface, wipe it down, then rinse with water. 3. Synthetic Wicker Furniture Not all outdoor furniture that looks like wicker is actually made of natural wicker—some is constructed from synthetic materials such as resin or plastic. Castro says you can clean synthetic wicker furniture with dish soap, but does not recommend using dish soap on natural wicker or wood surfaces to avoid damaging their finish. When cleaning synthetic wicker, make sure to use a non-abrasive sponge or brush that doesn’t cause scratches that can leave the material more vulnerable to weather-related damage. 4. Grill Grates Backyard barbecues may be fun, but cleaning sticky grill grates—not so much. Castro recommends using dish soap, which is both safe to use and effectively cuts through stubborn grease on gas and charcoal grills. As a general rule of thumb Dawn dish soap is safe to use on stainless steel, cast iron, and porcelain coated grills, but as with every appliance, it is best to check the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions to be on the safe side. 5. Kids’ Plastic Outdoor Toys If your kids have plastic outdoor toys on the patio, Castro suggests giving them a good clean with dish soap. In a large bucket, mix a couple of drops of dish soap with warm water and stir to combine. Use a non-abrasive sponge or bucket to scrub plastic toys clean, making sure you target any extra grimey spots or crevices that collect dirt and pollen. Rinse the toys with a hose and allow them to air dry completely. 6. Outdoor Coolers Between sticky spills and old food residue, outdoor coolers can get pretty gross. And since they hold food and drinks, it’s especially important to clean them properly and regularly in order to prevent mold from growing and potentially contaminating the cooler’s contents. Castro recommends using dish soap to clean outdoor coolers. If you notice that the cooler has an unpleasant smell, pre-treat it before cleaning. Mix equal parts water and distilled white vinegar in a spray bottle and generously spritz the inside of the cooler (including the lid) with the mixture. Let it work for at least 30 minutes before scrubbing down the cooler with warm soapy water. Rinse it off the suds with water, wipe it dry with a clean microfiber cloth, and leave it open to fully dry before stocking it again.
